Lithium Batteries: How to Choose the Right One
Lithium battery guide
Choosing a lithium battery, without guessing
The short answer
Most of the decision is three numbers and one honest answer about how you use the thing you are powering. Voltage has to match the motor or the system. Amp hours decide how long you run. The rest is build quality, which is where brands actually differ. Lithium Battery Power builds from Clearwater, Florida.
What do I actually need to know before buying a lithium battery?
Three things, in this order: voltage, amp hours, and whether the charger you own can charge it.
Voltage is not a preference. A 36V trolling motor needs 36V at the terminals, however you get there. Amp hours are the fuel tank. A 100Ah battery holds twice what a 50Ah battery holds, and because lithium gives you the whole tank rather than half of it, the comparison with an old lead acid bank is not like for like.
The third one catches people out. A lead acid charger can be wrong for lithium, and a solar charge controller has to be lithium compatible or it will not do the job properly.
How is a lithium battery different from lead acid in practice?
You can use all of it, it weighs far less, and the voltage does not sag as it empties.
Lead acid cannot be discharged more than about 80 percent, and most manufacturers tell you never to go past 50 percent if you want the battery to last. Lithium goes to 100 percent and holds consistent voltage the whole way down, so there is no fade in power as the day goes on. That alone changes how much capacity you need to buy.
Weight is the other one. LBP batteries run about 70 percent lighter than lead acid on average. On a bass boat that is a hole shot. In a van it is payload you get back.
What is a BMS and why does it matter?
It is the circuitry that keeps the cells safe, and every LBP battery has one built in.
The Battery Management System watches for the conditions that damage lithium cells, mainly temperature and short circuits, and shuts the battery off before harm is done. It also balances the cells against each other by adjusting charge rates, which is what keeps a pack performing evenly over years rather than drifting out of step.
It is also why a battery sometimes appears dead when it is not. A BMS that has gone to sleep is in protection mode, which is the safety feature working rather than a fault.
How long does a lithium battery last?
Between 5 and 15 years, or 2,000 to 5,000 charge cycles, depending on how hard it is worked.
That range is wide because the answer depends on you. A battery cycled to empty every weekend in summer heat ages faster than one that runs a cabin light bank. What the range does tell you is the comparison that matters at purchase: a lithium pack is replacing several lead acid banks over the same period, and that is the arithmetic to do rather than the sticker on the shelf.
Can I wire lithium batteries in series or parallel?
Yes, up to four in either direction.
Four in series and four in parallel is the maximum LBP supports. That is how a 12V battery becomes a 24V or 48V bank, and how a bank gets bigger without changing voltage. Beyond that, or for anything unusual, the sizing is worth a phone call rather than a guess, because a wrong series arrangement is an expensive mistake rather than a slow one.
What separates a good lithium pack from a cheap one?
The cells inside it.
Two batteries can carry the same voltage and the same amp hour figure on the label and behave nothing alike after eighteen months. What differs is cell quality, how the BMS is specified, and whether the pack was built to be repaired or built to be thrown away. LBP uses premium cylindrical cells, which is a deliberate choice rather than the cheapest route, and it is the reason the same pack keeps delivering the same performance on year four.
The other tell is whether anyone will talk to you about your actual setup. A battery is a component in a system, and the system is what decides whether it works.
Are lithium batteries waterproof?
No. LBP batteries are IP65 rated, which means they handle rain, spray and washdown.
Submerging one is different. The silicone seal can fail under immersion, and submerging a battery voids the warranty. On a boat that means mounting where water drains away rather than collects.
What does Bluetooth on a battery actually give you?
State of charge, without opening a hatch.
Several LBP batteries carry Bluetooth and report into the Battery Genie app on iOS and Android. The practical value is not the gadget, it is knowing what you have left before the run home rather than guessing from a voltage meter.
Which battery do I need for my application?
That depends on what you are powering, and each of these has its own page.
- Trolling motors, where voltage has to match the
motor and amp hours decide the fishing day.
- Marine, covering house banks, electronics and what IP65
means on the water.
- RV and van builds, where the battery is the house
system and charging comes from three directions at once.
- Golf carts, where a conversion changes the weight and
the range of the cart.
- How LBP compares to Dakota Lithium, if you are
choosing between brands.
Who is Lithium Battery Power?
A battery builder based in Clearwater, Florida, with more than 25,000 batteries distributed worldwide.
LBP designs high output lithium systems for demanding applications: trolling motors, RVs, solar arrays and industrial equipment. The range runs 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V, with chargers and custom builds alongside the standard sizes. Custom work is a real part of what the company does rather than a line on a page, which matters if your application does not fit a catalogue number.
