Lithium Backup Batteries for Cell Towers and Servers

Answer

How do I size a lithium backup battery for a cell tower or server?

The short answer

Divide the pack’s amp hours by the amps the equipment draws, and that is the hours on paper: a 100Ah pack on a 10 amp load is about ten hours. Lithium holds its voltage to the bottom, so the hours are real. Lithium Battery Power supplies backup packs from 12V up, with a BMS watching each one.

What do the packs back up?

Cell towers, data servers and emergency communication networks, in the company’s words. If the site runs something else, the company asks you to call with the load and it will help pick a setup.

How do I work out the runtime?

The company publishes it: amp hours divided by the load in amps gives hours. A 100Ah battery on a 10 amp load works out to about ten hours on paper.

Two things make lithium’s number closer to the real one than lead acid’s. Lithium can be run all the way down, where most lead acid makers say not to go past 50 percent, so a 100Ah lithium pack delivers 100Ah. And it holds a steady voltage the whole way, so the equipment is not browning out in the last hours. Size from the actual draw of the equipment, measured, not the nameplate.

How do I build a 24V or 48V bank?

Up to four LBP batteries connect in parallel or in series. Two 12V batteries in series make 24V; parallel doubles the amp hours. The company also builds 24V, 36V and 48V packs, so a higher voltage bank can start at that voltage rather than being built from 12V units, and a multi-bank charger will charge all of them at once.

The packs the company lists for communications run from the 12V 50Ah, for where space is tight, through the 12V 75Ah and 100Ah, to 24V 75Ah Bluetooth and 24V 150Ah units.

What protects a battery nobody is watching?

A backup battery sits on a site for months doing nothing, and then has to work. Every LBP battery has a built-in battery management system that stops overcharge, keeps the cells balanced while it charges, and shuts the battery off on a short or a temperature problem. A battery that has shut itself off is in protection mode, which is the BMS doing its job rather than a fault.

For a site nobody visits, the Bluetooth packs report charge, voltage, current and temperature to a phone within range, with alerts; the battery apps page covers it.

How are they charged?

A lithium compatible charger at the battery’s voltage, and the company recommends its own smart chargers. If an inverter charger does the charging, its voltages have to be set to the lithium profile the company publishes; the charger page has it.

Can they live outdoors?

The cases are IP65 rated: they can get wet, and they cannot be submerged, which fails the silicone seal and voids the warranty. Select models carry thermal protection for cold or high heat. An outdoor cabinet that drains is the right home.

Who builds it?

Lithium Battery Power, in Clearwater, Florida. Standard packs and custom builds. Call 727-223-9831 with the load in amps and the hours you need to cover, and the team will size the bank. The commercial and industrial page covers the rest of the company’s backup and equipment work.

Questions we get asked

How long will the equipment run in an outage?

Amp hours divided by amps. Measure the draw, and remember lithium delivers its full rating.

Can I replace a lead acid backup bank with lithium directly?

The charger or rectifier has to be lithium compatible or adjustable to the lithium profile. Check that first; the company will walk through it.

What happens when the battery is empty?

The BMS shuts it off to protect the cells rather than letting it run below its limit. It recovers when charging resumes.

Where next?

The main lithium battery guide covers what a BMS does, cycle life and how packs are wired, and the charger page and the battery apps page cover the two questions that come up most once a pack is in.
