How Do I Monitor a Lithium Battery From My Phone? LBP Apps

Answer

How do I monitor a lithium battery from my phone?

The short answer

With a Bluetooth-enabled pack and the builder’s app. Lithium Battery Power’s BT batteries report to Battery Genie on iPhone and Battery Mate on Android: charge level, voltage, current, temperature, performance and overall battery health, in real time, with alerts for critical events and a history to look back over. The battery stays in the hatch; the phone comes out.

What do the apps show?

The company lists the same five things for both: charge level, voltage, temperature, performance and overall battery health, read in real time from the battery. Current is in there too, so you can see what the trolling motor or the inverter is pulling at that moment.

Three features sit on top of the readings.

Smart alerts. Notifications for critical events and system updates, so a pack heading for protection mode tells you before it gets there.

Performance tracking. Historic data and trends, which is how you learn what a day on the water or a night off-grid actually costs in amp hours.

Battery health. A view of how the pack is ageing, to extend its life.

Which app do I need?

Phone App
iPhone Battery Genie, on the App Store
Android Battery Mate, on Google Play

Both are the company’s own, and both work with Bluetooth-enabled Lithium Battery Power batteries, the ones with BT in the name.

Which packs have Bluetooth?

The company lists them on its monitoring page. For boats: the 24V 75Ah BT and 24V 90Ah BT, compact packs it describes as built for trolling motors and inshore anglers; the 36V 60Ah BT and the 36V 120Ah BT, its flagship 36V marine battery. For 12V house use: the 12V 100Ah BT, 12V 120Ah BT and the HP 12V 108Ah. For bigger banks: the 48V 120Ah BT.

Not every pack carries Bluetooth, so check the name before buying if monitoring is the point.

Why does it matter more than it sounds?

A battery lives where you cannot see it. On a boat, in a compartment; in a van, under a seat; on a tower site, in a cabinet. The question that matters is always the same: have I got enough left for what I am about to do. The 36V trolling motor page and the solar page both come back to it, and the communications backup page is about a battery nobody is there to check at all.

What can the app not do?

It reads. It does not change the battery’s protection settings, and it does not replace the battery management system, which runs inside the pack whether or not a phone is nearby. If a pack has shut itself off, the app tells you; the BMS decided.

Questions we get asked

How far away does the phone have to be?

Bluetooth range, which in practice means on the boat or in the vehicle, not across a car park.

Can one app watch several batteries?

The apps connect to Bluetooth-enabled LBP batteries; ask the company how it handles a bank of several packs before building one.

Does Bluetooth drain the battery?

It is a small, constant draw, far below anything the battery is there to power.

Do I need the app for the battery to work?

No. The pack and its BMS run on their own. The app is the window.

Talk to someone who builds these

LBP builds custom packs as well as shipping standard sizes, and the team will size a bank to the boat, the cart or the rig before anything is bought.
