What Is the Best 36V Lithium Trolling Motor Battery?

Answer

What is the best 36V lithium trolling motor battery?

The short answer

The one sized to the day you fish, not the biggest one. A 36V motor wants a single 36V pack rather than three 12V batteries, and the choice is capacity against weight. Lithium Battery Power builds two: a 36V 60Ah for runtime without the weight, and a 36V 120Ah flagship for long offshore days, both with Bluetooth.

Why one 36V pack rather than three 12V batteries?

Trolling motors at 36V were built around three lead acid batteries in series because that was what existed. One 36V lithium pack does the same job in one box: one set of cables, one battery management system watching every cell, one thing to mount and one thing to charge. It is also the biggest single weight saving on the boat, because the three lead acid batteries it replaces are usually the heaviest thing aboard after the engine. LBP batteries are on average about 70 percent lighter than lead acid.

The trolling motor sizing page covers the voltage question in full. This page is about choosing between 36V packs once you are there.

How much capacity do I need?

Amp hours are how long the motor runs. The rough arithmetic the company gives is amp hours divided by the load in amps: a 100Ah pack on a 10 amp draw is about ten hours on paper, and a trolling motor’s draw rises with speed. A full day of holding on a point in wind is not the same day as a morning of easing along a bank.

Lithium is also usable to the bottom. The company’s FAQ puts it plainly: lead acid should not go past 50 percent and most makers say so, while a lithium pack can be run down fully and holds a steady voltage the whole way, so the motor does not fade in the afternoon.

Which 36V packs does LBP build?

Pack How the company describes it
LBP 36V 60Ah BT Bluetooth monitoring with mid-range capacity, for anglers who want reliability without the extra weight
LBP 36V 120Ah BT The flagship 36V marine battery, Bluetooth-enabled, built for offshore endurance and maximum runtime

There is also a 36V 120Ah without Bluetooth, listed for commercial vehicles and equipment. For a boat, the two above are the choice, and it is the day length that decides between them.

What is inside, and what does it mean on the water?

Every LBP battery has a built-in battery management system that stops overcharge and deep discharge, keeps the cells balanced while charging, and shuts the pack off on a short or a temperature problem. A pack that has gone quiet is in protection mode, which is the BMS doing its job. The cases are IP65 rated: they can get wet, and they cannot be submerged, which voids the warranty. On a boat that means mounting where water drains away, which the marine page covers.

Why does Bluetooth matter on a trolling motor?

A trolling motor battery lives in a compartment you do not open while fishing. The BT packs report charge, voltage, current and temperature to the company’s phone apps, so you know at nine in the morning whether you have the afternoon. The battery apps page covers Battery Genie and Battery Mate.

How do I charge a 36V pack?

A lithium compatible charger at the same voltage, and the company recommends its own LBP smart chargers. The charger page covers what a charger has to do and what an inverter charger needs setting to.

Who builds it?

Lithium Battery Power, in Clearwater, Florida, with more than 25,000 batteries distributed, and custom packs built as well as the standard sizes. Call 727-223-9831 with the motor, the boat and the kind of day you fish, and the team will size the bank before anything is bought.

Questions we get asked

Can I run two 36V packs together?

Up to four LBP batteries can be connected, in parallel or in series. Two 36V packs in parallel doubles the amp hours at the same voltage. Call before wiring anything.

Will a 36V lithium pack work with my existing motor?

A 36V motor runs on a 36V pack. What changes is the charger, which has to be lithium compatible, and the mounting, because the pack is lighter and smaller than what it replaces.

How long will it last?

The company rates most of its batteries at 3,000 to 5,000 cycles, which it translates into years of use depending on charging habits and depth of discharge.

Is the 60Ah enough?

For a half day inshore, often. For a full day in wind, or any offshore run, the 120Ah is the pack the company built for it. The comparison with Dakota Lithium sets LBP’s packs beside another brand’s.
