Marine Lithium Batteries: What Holds Up on Salt Water

Lithium batteries on a boat

The short answer

A boat asks more of a battery than almost anything else: vibration, heat, spray, and a duty cycle that swings from nothing to everything. What matters is not the amp hour figure on the wrap, it is what the pack is made of and where it is mounted. Lithium Battery Power builds from Clearwater, Florida.

What makes a lithium battery a marine battery?

Three things: the cells, the ingress rating, and a BMS that behaves properly in heat.

Marine service is hard on hardware. A battery in a console or under a deck sees temperature swings, constant vibration at speed, and salt air that finds every unsealed edge. LBP batteries use premium cylindrical cells and carry a Battery Management System in every pack, which shuts the battery down before temperature or a short does damage and keeps cells balanced against each other over the years rather than letting them drift apart.

The ingress rating tells you the rest. LBP batteries are IP65, which covers rain, spray and washdown.

Can a marine lithium battery get submerged?

No, and this is the one specification people misread.

IP65 means water from any direction is fine. Immersion is a different test and LBP batteries do not pass it: the silicone seal can fail under water, and submerging a battery voids the warranty. In practice that means choosing a compartment where water drains away rather than one that occasionally holds an inch of it. A bilge that stays wet is the wrong place regardless of rating.

Do I need separate batteries for the trolling motor and the house?

Usually yes, because the two jobs are nothing alike.

A trolling motor bank delivers high current in bursts and gets run down hard. A house bank runs electronics, lights, pumps and a fridge at a low steady draw for hours. Sizing them as one bank means one of the two jobs is done badly, and it is normally the electronics that suffer when the motor has been working.

Voltage often differs too. Trolling motors are commonly 24V or 36V while the house side is 12V, so they are separate systems before capacity even comes into it.

How much weight does a lithium bank save on a boat?

About 70 percent on average against the lead acid it replaces.

On a bass boat with a 36V trolling motor bank, that is the heaviest single item in the stern, and taking most of it out changes the hole shot, the ride and the fuel burn. On a larger hull with a big house bank, it is payload back and less trim correction.

Why does cell quality matter more on a boat than anywhere else?

Because a boat is the environment that finds the weakness fastest.

Vibration, heat and hard cycling are exactly the conditions that separate a pack built with good cells from one built to a number. Two batteries with identical labels can behave the same for a season and differently by the third summer, and the difference shows up as runtime you no longer have on the days you care about. LBP uses premium cylindrical cells rather than the cheapest route to the same headline figure, and that choice is the reason it gives the life range it does.

The other thing a boat rewards is being able to ring somebody who builds these and describe your actual hull.

How long should a marine lithium battery last?

Between 5 and 15 years, or 2,000 to 5,000 charge cycles.

Where a given boat lands in that range is decided by how deeply the bank is cycled and how hot it gets. Tournament use every weekend in a Gulf summer is the hard end of it. A house bank on a cruiser that runs a fridge and some lights is the easy end.

How should a marine lithium bank be charged?

With a lithium charger at the matching voltage, or an inverter charger set to a lithium profile.

LBP recommends its own lithium smart chargers, which carry a one year manufacturer’s warranty. A multi bank charger handles several batteries at once, and every LBP battery has a BMS that prevents overcharging. Where an inverter charger is doing the work, aim for bulk at 14.4V, absorb at 14.6V and float at 13.6V, and never exceed 15V. If the charger has no custom lithium setting, choose the closest profile that stays under that ceiling.

Can I see the state of charge without opening a hatch?

On Bluetooth models, yes, through the Battery Genie app on iOS and Android.

The practical use is deciding whether to make one more drift or start back, without lifting a lid in a chop or trusting a voltage gauge that lies as the day goes on.

Who builds Lithium Battery Power batteries and where?

LBP is based at Clearwater, Florida, and has distributed more than 25,000 batteries worldwide.

The company designs high output lithium systems for marine, RV, solar, golf cart, industrial and communications use, in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V, and builds custom packs alongside the standard range. If a boat needs something that is not a catalogue size, that is the part of the business worth calling about.

Where next?

choosing between brands.
