Converting a Golf Cart to Lithium

Golf carts

Putting lithium in a golf cart

The short answer

A cart running lead acid is carrying several hundred pounds of battery it does not need, losing speed as the charge drops, and needing water topped up to stay healthy. A lithium conversion removes all three problems at once. The part worth getting right is voltage, and after that the charger.

What voltage do I need for a golf cart conversion?

Match whatever the cart runs now: commonly 36V or 48V.

The controller and motor are built around a voltage and that does not change because the chemistry does. You reach it either with a single battery at that voltage or with smaller batteries in series. LBP supports up to four in series, which covers the usual arrangements, and the range runs 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V.

If you are unsure what the cart is, count and read the existing batteries before ordering anything. It is a five minute check that prevents the most expensive mistake in this job.

How much lighter is a lithium cart?

Roughly 70 percent lighter on the battery, which on a cart is a large share of the whole vehicle.

Six lead acid batteries in a 48V cart is a serious amount of weight low down. Taking most of it out changes acceleration, how the cart climbs, how it handles on turf, and how much range you get from the same energy. It also stops the suspension working as hard.

Does a lithium cart actually go further?

It goes further on the same capacity, and it keeps its speed while it does.

Two things are happening. Lead acid cannot be run below about half its rating without shortening its life, so half of what you bought is not usable. Lithium gives you all of it. And lead acid voltage sags as it empties, so the cart slows down through the afternoon, while lithium holds consistent voltage all the way down. The last hole feels like the first.

What maintenance does a lithium cart need?

None of the maintenance a lead acid cart needs.

No watering, no terminal cleaning from acid, no equalising charges and no worrying about leaving it partly discharged over a few weeks. The Battery Management System inside each LBP battery handles cell balance and protects against overcharging, temperature and short circuits on its own.

For storage, leave the batteries at around half charge in a cool dry place rather than full or empty.

What do people get wrong on a golf cart conversion?

Keeping the old charger.

A lead acid charger is not a lithium charger, and using one is the most common reason a fresh conversion underperforms. LBP recommends its own lithium smart chargers at the matching voltage, and they carry a one year manufacturer’s warranty. The second mistake is ordering by guess rather than reading the voltage off the cart first, which turns a straightforward afternoon into a return and a wait.

The third is assuming every conversion is the same job. Carts differ, and a quick conversation about yours is free.

How long will a lithium golf cart battery last?

Between 5 and 15 years, or 2,000 to 5,000 charge cycles.

A cart used around a neighbourhood or a course a few times a week sits at the easy end of that range. A cart working every day at a resort or a site sits nearer the hard end. Either way it is a very different replacement cycle from the lead acid bank it replaces.

Can the batteries get wet on a cart?

Rain and washdown are fine. Standing water is not.

LBP batteries are IP65 rated, so weather and hosing down are within the specification. Submerging one can fail the silicone seal and voids the warranty, which in cart terms means not mounting where water pools and not driving a converted cart through flooding.

Can I monitor the charge from my phone?

On Bluetooth models, through the Battery Genie app on iOS and Android.

Useful on a cart because there is rarely a good gauge fitted, and a real state of charge beats watching for the moment it starts slowing down.

Is a lithium conversion worth it?

That depends on how much you use the cart, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

The comparison to run is not one lithium pack against one lead acid set. It is one lithium pack against the several sets of lead acid you would buy over the same 5 to 15 years, plus the watering and the replacements, minus the weight and the performance you did not have. For carts that get used regularly the answer tends to be clear. For a cart used twice a year it is less so, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.

Where next?

between brands.

Lithium Battery Power builds from Clearwater, Florida, has distributed more than 25,000 batteries worldwide, and builds custom packs where a cart needs something that is not a standard size.
